The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly last night approved adding $500,000 to the Baranof Park project and authorized funding a fisheries consultant to be shared with the city.

A lot of people will be happy with the borough’s decision to add another half-a-million bucks to the Baranof Park project. The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly last night approved the addition $500-thousand as part of a mid-year budget adjustment.

Rich Walker was one of the people supporting the project:

However, not everyone is as keen on the idea. Assembly woman Louise Stutes said at the end of the meeting that while she’s sure it will get used, the expense of the Baranof Park project makes her uncomfortable.

Another item that brought mixed responses was the hiring of a fisheries consultant. The contract plus expenses will be split with the City of Kodiak.

Tuck Bonney, who works for one of the local seafood processors, was the lone vote against the fisheries advisor contract. As one who travels to many of the fish meetings, Bonney said he thinks people will be amazed at the costs involved.

The assembly voted 6-1 to approve a two-year contract with Denby Lloyd’s company Alaska Resource Consultancy at the rate of $4,000 a month, plus reasonable travel, which will all be split 50/50 with the city.

In other business, the assembly unanimously approved the rezoning of a group of lots at Cutoff Road between Rezanof Drive and Spruce Cape Road.

Del Green owns part of that property.

This was the last scheduled assembly meeting for the year 2012.
