Kodiak Bears Tops in Northern Lights Conference

Jay Barrett/KMXT

The Kodiak High School Bears are the regional champions in wrestling for the first time in 20 years. Over the weekend here in Kodiak the Bears steamrolled to the Northern Lights Championship title with 304.5 team points, outdistancing defending champion Wasilla, which scored only 275.5. The last time Kodiak was regional champion was 1992.

Palmer was third with 197.5 points, Colony, in fourth, had 191.5-points. Kenai had 94.5 and Soldotna had 89. Homer and Skyview no longer wrestle in the 4-A division and did not participate.

Kodiak had four individual champions and four wrestlers in second place. The champions were Andrew Caballa at 106 pounds, Levi Fried at 113, Kerry Powers at 170 and Charlie Johnson at 182.

Francis Lorente was second at 120 pounds, but it took Wasilla’s Abe Fox double overtime to win 3-to-2.

It also took Colony’s Sawyer Root overtime to beat Kevin Lepola at 152 pounds.

Also in second place for the Bears were Cameron White at 132, and Chris Parsons at 170.

We have full results after the jump.

Kodiak’s Sean Costello was named the Northern Lights Conference coach of the year.

The 4-A wrestling state championships start on Friday at Bartlett High School in Anchorage.
