Kodiak’s tanner crab will be the center of attention at a gathering in Anchorage tonight. The Alaska Marine Conservation Council is hosting "Taste of Kodiak" at Orso, a popular downtown restaurant. The event will feature tanner crab hors d’oeuvres, wine and a chance to "mingle with Kodiak fishermen."

Theresa Peterson is the outreach coordinator for the Kodiak office of the Alaska Marine Conservation Council. She says the event is part of an effort to market Alaska seafood to Alaskans.

"The idea is to bring more of our seafood into our local Alaska community," she said. "Alaska is so big and widespread that we really don’t have a lot of demand just on the island of Kodiak, but on the mainland a lot of people aren’t really aware of the seafood that’s being harvested right in their own front yard, so to speak."

Most tanner crab, which is known for its premium texture and flavor, is sold to markets in Japan. The event is sold out.
