Caballa Brings Home Gold from Wrestling Championships

The Kodiak High School Bears wrestling squad finished third overall in the State 4-A Wrestling Championship over the weekend, scoring 201.5 team points.

One Kodiak wrestler, Andrew Caballa, came home as an individual state champion, defeating his East High opponent 11-0 at 106 pounds. Caballa had a takedown in each of the first two periods and nearly pinned East’s Kyle Willard in the third.

Three other Bears were runners-up. Francis Llorente at 120 pounds, Cameron White at 132, and Charlie Johnson at 182 pounds. Two other Kodiak wrestlers also made the podium, placing third. Eddy Burris at 120 and Kevin Lepola at 152. In fifth were freshman Levi Fried at 113 pounds and Chris Parsons at 170. Derrek Deal was sixth at 160.

The state championship went to Service, which scored 250.5 points. Wasilla was second with 214.5, while South and East Anchorage were fourth and fifth, respectively.
