Local Commerical Radio Station Changes Format

Even though you’re listening to public radio KMXT right now, we understand if your radio dial strays once in a while. If it happens to stray up the dial one notch to KRXX, you’ll find a new music format. Gone is "Jack FM," which has been replaced by "Hot 101.1."

Chuck Wright is the operations manager at Kodiak Island Broadcasting, which owns KRXX as well as country station KVOK. He says the new format should appeal to a broader audience than Jack FM did:

— (KRXX 1 22 sec "The format Jack FM … between 30 and 45-year-olds.")

He says the songs on Hot 101.1 will still be the hits, but they’ll be selected from a wider range of years:

— (KRXX 2 34 sec "It’s really a mixture of hot AC … Maroon 5, things like that.")

Wright says the new format will be programmed locally, rather than coming in on a satellite like Jack FM did.

— (KRXX 3 12 sec "We will have some live DJs … as we get the foundation laid.")

Don Mega is an afternoon DJ at K-FAT in Anchorage, and through the magic of networking he will do the morning show from there.

Station Manager Ellen Simeonoff (SIM-ee-on/off) said she’s long wanted to do some local programming.

— (KRXX 4 14 sec "I’ve actually wanted to … lifetime dream, just achieved. Seriously.")

Both Simeonoff and Wright agreed that the Jack FM format, which has been around about five years, was getting a little too familiar:

— (KRXX 5 14 sec "It was getting predictable … more chick songs in there.")

The new Hot 101.1 format went live Thursday night. Wright is programming more music for the station, and since it includes modern hit music, there’ll be new songs on a regular basis.
