Man Rescued Northwest of Cold Bay

The Coast Guard medevaced a fisherman from the Seattle-based vessel Arctic Storm 63 miles west of Cold Bay Wednesday night.

An Air Station Kodiak helicopter rescued the man who was reportedly suffering from cardiac distress. The aircraft is assigned to the Cutter Healy which was on patrol in the Bering Sea.

Coast Guard District 17 watchstanders requested that the crew of the 314-foot vessel divert course to bring the ship within range of the Healy. The helicopter was launched and the crew safely hoisted the patient at 11:44 p.m. Conditions reported were 17 m.p.h. winds and eight-foot seas. The man was taken to Cold Bay where he was met by an emergency medical crew and treated at the Cold Bay clinic until commercial services were able to take him to a place that offered more care.
