Earlier this week Luke Fulp, finance director for the Kodiak Island Borough School District, painted a somewhat rosier picture for residents concerned about the $3.5 million deficit that the district is facing. Fulp says Main Elementary is safe from closure due in part to the Legislature’s increased support for education funding. Concerns about closure of the school arose at a previous meeting. If the stars align the district could see about $650,000 from an increase in the base student allocation and state money to offset increasing energy and transportation costs. At Monday’s meeting Fulp presented 10 budget scenarios, eight of those asked for more money from the borough, however the assembly isn’t rushing to increase funding to the district.
In an interview with KMXT’s, Fulp talks at length about the borough’s perspective on the budget process, how a lack of financial commitment from the state causes undue worry and where things go from here.
