KMXT 100.1 FM Public Radio in Kodiak, Alaska
Over 100 high school athletes will be competing here in Kodiak this weekend. Both high schools from the state capital, Juneau-Douglas and Thunder Mountain will be joined by Wasilla and Port Lions in events starting Friday afternoon.
Events start at 3:30 p.m. with the Emerald Isle Co-Ed Relay Challenge. Kodiak Coach Marcus Dunbar says the event will be scored as a co-ed relay, even in races that are not relays. To do this, he says the performances of the top two boys and girls from each team in the individual events will be combined, with a score of 10 given to the fastest or farthest, followed by six points for second and three for third.
He is also pitting regions against each other, with Kodiak and Port Lions combining to face off against the combined Juneau schools. Wasilla will represent the valley on its own. The events will include running and throwing at the Joe Floyd Track and Field, and include the triple jump if the pit is ready. Once again this week the long jump will be held at the pool, where participants will get a running start and leap into the water.
Saturday will be a straight-up invitational meet starting at 9 a.m., with each school and gender for themselves.
