Though Thursday night’s Kodiak Island Borough Assembly meeting was dominated by discussion of funding the next phase of the extended-care facility project, other things did get accomplished.
An issue of stream runoff from near the landfill onto Reed Oswalt’s property was resolved shortly after he visited the assembly at their work session the week before, and for that he was thankful
Coach Joe Floyd addressed the assembly, asking that the borough consider naming recreational portions of the expanded high school after Ian Fulp, the city’s parks and recreation director who is retiring this fall after 40 years on the job.
The assembly also extended its contract with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for two years. It gives them a three-percent raise retroactive to January 1st of this year, and another raise on January 1st 2013, which will be tied to the Anchorage consumer price index. The raise will be given to non-union employees as well. Assemblywoman Chris Lynch said the raises were well-deserved.
The assembly also approved a rezoning for a lot in Old Harbor, changing it from residential to industrial. The change will allow the installation of a communications tower in the community to provide cell phone and broadband wireless internet. The tract of land also includes the town’s landfill.
