The Kodiak Island Borough is expected to take another step forward tonight toward finding a replacement for former Borough Manager Rick Gifford.
The assembly is scheduled to meet in executive session during tonight’s regular meeting to review applications from prospective replacements for the manager position.
Gifford’s last day was the 13th. He tendered his resignation last month after seven years with the borough. He is moving to Anchorage to be closer to family.
The assembly has already narrowed down the 32 initial applicants to 15, who will be considered tonight. Six of them are from Alaska, including one from Kodiak Island: Fred Brooks of Old Harbor.
The other Alaskans are Thomas Bolen of Anchorage, William Butler of Fairbanks, Lee Foley of Bethel, Patrick Jordan of King Salmon, and Barbara Lewis-Fleming of Koyukuk.
The other applicants hail from California, Georgia, Colorado, Washington State, Nevada; and Maine. There are two candidates from Michigan. We’ve got a list of all the candidates after the jump.

The assembly’s executive session comes at the end of what is expected to be a relatively quiet meeting. No public hearings are scheduled, though there are three contracts slated for approval.
The first is the recycling contract with Threshold Services which currently collects, sorts and ships area recyclables to off-island centers. The contract calls for the borough to pay a flat rate of $17,500 per month, which is $210,000 annually. As part of the contract, Threshold in turn will pay the borough 10 percent of the first year’s and 15 percent of subsequent years’ income from the sale of the recyclables.
And like their city counterparts who are meeting down the hall, assembly members will consider contracts with the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce and the Kodiak Island Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.
The borough’s share for the chamber contract is $43,000, while the contract being considered with the visitors’ bureau would cost the borough $65,000. The visitors’ bureau is funded with the borough’s bed tax.
