Voter Deadlines For Upcoming Elections

Brianna Gibbs/KMXT

Last week the candidate filing period wrapped up for various offices in the Kodiak Island Borough, along with slots for the Kodiak City Council. The municipal election is well over a month away, on October 2, but there are some important dates that voters should keep in mind.

August 31 is the last day to register to vote, or change current voter information. Anyone who will turn 18 by October 2 will be eligible to vote and can register now, even if they are still 17. For those who won’t make it to the polls on October 2, absentee ballot applications will be accepted through September 24. The deadline for submitting those ballots for the municipal election is October 9.

Looking ahead at the primary election, voting is just around the corner and will take place on August 28. Applications for absentee ballots in that election were due Saturday. As for the general election, that will take place on November 6. The voter registration or information update deadline is October 7. Absentee ballot applications are due by October 27. State law does grant same day voter registration for the President and Vice President, meaning someone can walk into a polling booth, register and then vote. That person will not, however, be permitted to vote for any state government positions.

If you have questions about absentee voting or elections in general should contact the Borough Clerk’s Office at 486-9310.
