Turnovers Spoil New Field’s Inauguration

The weather gods christened the new track and turf at the Joe Floyd Field in grand fashion, with storm-force winds and torrential rain on Saturday in the homecoming game between the Kodiak Bears and their arch-rival the Soldotna Stars. Unfortunately, the result was the same as every other game the Bears have ever played against So-Hi – a Kodiak loss.
The Bears turned the ball over on their first four possessions and Soldotna capitalized with four touchdowns, on the way to a 41-to-7 victory over the Bears.
The two teams were at the top of the Northern Lights Conference, and this game was a battle for first place, which Soldotna now holds exclusively.
With wind gusts near 50 miles per hour, it’s not surprising that neither team completed a pass.
The Stars are now 4-0 in the Northern Lights Conference and 5-1 overall, while Kodiak is 2-1 in the league and 3-3 overall.
Kodiak has one more home game this season, on Friday at 7 p.m., against the Homer Mariners, before finishing on the road against the Skyview Panthers on September 29th.
At Fort Abercrombie on Friday the Kodiak boys won handily over visiting Grace Christian, 19-to-44, with Cole Christiansen, Levi Thomet and Julian McCarthy finishing in a group. The Kodiak girls fell to Grace 25-31.
In the pool, Anchorage’s Dimond High School swept the Bears, though the Kodiak girls made it close. The final was 94-to-91. The Kodiak boys didn’t fare quite as well, falling 111-to-65.
