Council, Assemblly Meeting Separately Tonight

Despite having to cancel its work session on Tuesday, the Kodiak City Council is scheduled to meet for a regular meeting tonight in the borough assembly chambers. Heavy fog prevented a number of members from returning to Kodiak and the work session on Tuesday was cancelled because due to lack of a quorum. Items that were on that agenda have been moved to the October 23 work session.
Weather permitting, tonight the council will welcome new councilman Rich Walker and welcome back incumbent Gabriel Saravia, both winners in the October 2 municipal election. The two will be sworn in during tonight’s meeting and Councilman Mark Vizcocho will say his goodbyes. Vizcocho was appointed to the council earlier this year to fill the vacated term of Josie Rosales. He ran for election but was displaced by Walker.

At the same time as the city council meeting, the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly will also meet for a work session downstairs in the borough conference room. Assembly members will discuss a proposal to terminate a contract between the Kodiak Island Borough and Kodiak Construction Services, a company owned and operated by Assemblywoman Chris Lynch. The contract between Lynch and the borough raised questions among some assembly members about conflict of interest during last Thursday’s regular meeting, but ultimately the assembly voted against terminating the contract until the details could be hashed out during a work session.
Both meetings will begin at 7:30 p.m. KMXT will broadcast the city council meeting live.
