The results of a worldwide survey conducted by the makers of Gore-Tex fabric revealed what local hunters have always known: Kodiak is one of the best places for hunting, and the weather can be challenging.

Tim Dennis is the marketing leader for W. L. Gore Associates, the company behind the survey.
“It was a pretty simple survey. We asked respondents to share their opinions of the top locations with the worst conditions, but just as important was the best hunting," Dennis said."And each location was rated on a scale of one to 10 across several categories: the quality of the game, the quantity of animals, their success rates, the scenery and amenities for hunters.”

Dennis said the goal behind the survey was to show hunters worldwide that with the right gear they can hunt and recreate anywhere.

— (Kodiak Hunters 2 :18 “So we wanted to put together a survey to inspire serious hunters and get them thinking about some of their most exciting and rewarding hunts that they’ve been involved with. Or destinations that they’ve heard about that deliver great and exciting hunts.”)

He said the company wanted the best feedback on hunting, and to do that they sought out the hunters themselves.

— (Kodiak Hunters 3 : 23 “We reached out to avid hunter athletes. We reached out to journalists from some of the leading hunting publications, specifically hunter America, sportsmen’s news, outdoor life, American water fowler and many others. And we also reached out to representatives of some of the top hunting organizations.”)

In the end, he said Kodiak came out on top by a long shot.

— (Kodiak Hunters 4 : 24 “When we looked a the data and how all the destinations were ranked, it was clear that Kodiak was the front runner. Kodiak was listed by more respondents than any other destination, and Kodiak scored very well across the specific categories of the quantity and the quality of the wild game. As well as the scenery.”)

He said even more respondents mentioned the treacherous terrain and constantly changing weather as factors contributing to the overall experience and challenge of hunting in Kodiak. Dennis said the company hopes to conduct more surveys like this in the future, but for now Kodiak can be proud that despite having the worst weather conditions, it’s still the best place to hunt.
