Kodiak Under Blizzard Warning

A blizzard warning remains in effect for Kodiak Island, and weather officials are warning of visibilities of a quarter mile or less at times with the possibility of zero visibility in whiteout conditions this afternoon.
Snow accumulation of four- to eight-inches can be expected this afternoon, with deeper drifts.
Highs will be in the mid 30s through early afternoon, but fall to the low to mid 20s later in the afternoon as a cold arctic air mass comes south and mixes with the moist air of a receding low pressure system.
Northeast winds 25 to 40 mph with gusts to 50 mph are forecast, shifting northwest 35 to 50 mph with gusts to 60 mph by late afternoon. Visibility could be severely hampered by whiteout conditions late this afternoon and evening.
Snow and blowing snow are expected to continue through the evening with snow showers and areas of blowing snow after midnight. An additional accumulation of up to two inches is expected. Lows will be around 20 degrees, with northwest winds 35 to 50, with gusts to 60 mph overnight.
The Kodiak Harbormasters Office is urging boat owners to take care of their vessels, as wet snow and high winds could create problems with floatation or flying debris swept off deck.
Tom Lance of the Monashka Bay Road Service Area says roads will only be plowed and sanded ONCE today until visibility and snow drifting stops. The roads covered include Marmot, Three Sisters, and Mountain View Drive. He also asks drivers not to park in cul-de-sacs and other areas used during snow plowing.
