Bears Sweep Competition in Fairbanks

The Kodiak High School Bears basketball teams swept the field in the inaugural Joe T. Classic at Lathrop High School in Fairbanks over the weekend.
The Lady Bears won the championship with a 48-36 win over the Bartlett Golden Bears, while the Kodiak boys downed the host Malemutes 50-49 on a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Austin Frick.
He was later named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, and Josh Obas joined him on the All-Tournament team. Frick also won the tournament’s three-point shooting contest.
Jerica Nelson had 13 points in the girls championship game and Hannah Wandersee, who made the All-Tournament team, added 10.
The boys downed the West Valley Wolfpack and the North Pole Patriots earlier in the tournament, while the Lady Bears defeated the Malemutes and the Wolfpack on their way to perfect 3-0 records in the round-robin tournament.
