Kodiak residents looking for an excuse to go shopping this weekend need not look further. Saturday is tax free day in Kodiak, which is exactly how it sounds. For one day only any local retailer or restaurant will forego sales tax on all purchases. Joe Bailor is the economic development specialist for the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce and said the first Friday in March event actually helps the local economy.

He said the tax exemption applies to all businesses, including chain restaurants like McDonalds. The financial break doesn’t include things like rent payments, but Bailor said any other purchase made at local retailer on Saturday will be tax free.
