Strong Sockeye Return Prompts Slightly Early Opening to Kodiak Salmon Season

As we mentioned this week, the sockeye salmon run is coming back pretty strong in several river systems around the Kodiak Archipelago, and as a result, Fish and Game is opening commercial fishing a couple days early, according to James Jackson, the area management biologist.
He said other systems are performing strongly for this early in the season as well.
As Jackson mentioned, the sockeye return to Karluk Lake is going well this year, but he referred questions about how the strong run might affect decisions to fertilize the lake to higher-ups in the department.
He added that participation should be about the same as recent years, and that fishermen are pretty excited about the strong early runs.
The department’s first emergency order has staggered openings for several different sections and districts Friday, Saturday and Sunday. KMXT airs those announcements several times a day, and you can hear them yourself by calling the Fish and Game record-a-phone hotline at 486-4559.
