Future Looks Bleak for Cutter Storis

KETCHIKAN, Alaska (AP) — Alaskans hoping to save a former Coast Guard cutter as a museum have spoken to its new owner but say the odds are not good that the vessel can be preserved.
Joe Geldhof of the Juneau-based Storis Museum and Educational Center says the group is in preliminary discussions with the new owner.
The Storis was launched in 1942. The Ketchikan Daily News reports it was the first U.S. vessel to circumnavigate North America.
It was the oldest Coast Guard ship from 1991 to 2007.
The Storis was sold in a General Services Administration auction last month. Geldhof says the buyer in in the metal trade and intends to scrap the ship.
He says the likely location for a museum is Ohio if the vessel is saved.
