Examiners from the Kodiak detachment of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer free recreational vessel safety checks at the launch ramp in St. Herman Harbor on Saturday morning (July 6).
Boats that pass the exam will be given the official 2013 safety decal for display, and may be eligible for insurance discounts.
The safety checks are not a law enforcement function, rather auxiliary examiners confirm the boat’s condition and equipment and ensure they comply with federal regulations, but do not issue tickets or fines.
Boat owners can also contact the Auxiliary to schedule safety checks at other times.
The Auxiliary is a uniformed, though volunteer civilian branch of the Coast Guard, with more than 31,000 members nationwide. They take part in public education, environmental protection and safety patrols.
