Biosolids are back on the agenda for the Kodiak Borough Assembly. Tonight the assembly will meet for a regular meeting and decide whether or not to transfer a site at the landfill to the city for long-term composting operations.
The 2.6 acre site is south of active operations at the landfill, different from where class B composting is currently being done. The city will be responsible for building a road to the proposed site, and constructing a building to support the operation. The hope is that the city will eventually acquire the licensing and permits required for Class A compost, but until then it will continue Class B operations at the new site.
The city and borough have had a temporary license agreement for the past eight months, which has allowed the processing of Class B compost at the landfill, but that agreement expires today. This puts a bit pressure on tonight’s vote. If the resolution fails to garner assembly support than the city will once again be scrambling for a quick fix to the long-running question of what to do with Kodiak’s biosolids.
A number of Monashka Bay residents have spoken out against the proposed site for fear of ground water run off coming in contact with underground wells in surrounding neighborhoods.
Tonight’s meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. in the borough assembly chambers. Public comments are accepted before and after the meeting and limited to three minutes per speaker. The meeting will also be broadcast live on KMXT.
