One of Two Assemblywomen Seeking Re-Election

Kodiak Island Borough Assemblywoman Louise Stutes will not be seeking a third term.

There will be two seats on the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly coming open this fall, but only one incumbent seeing re-election. Assemblywoman Carol Austerman filed yesterday, and is so far the only candidate to do so.
Assemblywoman Louise Stutes, who will wrap up her second term this year, announced last week she would not seek at third.
“You know I’ve had a wonderful run for six years. I think six years is enough time to sit on this assembly, and I encourage people to run,” she said. “We need young people, we need new, fresh ideas. And so I’d love to see somebody from one the villages to run. We need some village representation on this assembly. It’s a wonderful opportunity. So please, there’s going to be at least one seat that I know of open. So I encourage anybody that’s remotely interested. It’s a great group of people and they’ll help you out. Don’t be afraid. Give it a shot.”
Jerome Selby’s current term as borough mayor is also expiring, though at this point only former Assemblyman Jerrol Friend has filed for that position.
The only other candidate for any of the 14 open seats on the borough’s various boards to have filed so far is Darlene Turner, who has thrown her hat into the ring for the Monashka Bay Road Service Area Board.
The filing period ends at 4:30 next Thursday afternoon. The municipal election will be on October 1st.
