KMXT 100.1 FM Public Radio in Kodiak, Alaska
It’s August again in Kodiak, and while it might not be particularly warm, the annual Warm August Night will still kick off this Saturday. The evening, which features local and out of town musicians, is hosted by the Kodiak Lions Club. Jeremiah “Doc” Myers said the event is what he calls a “food-raiser.”
“Kind of like a fundraiser but we’re raising food for the foodbank. And we had about 20 cases last year and if you don’t bring at least a couple cans of food per person, then we charge a little money and that goes into the kitty.”)
In general, he said they ask people bring two cans of food, or $5, to give at the gate. This year music should start up around 7 p.m. and run straight on through to the last band, which Myers said should start up sometime around 11 p.m.
This year’s line up features Feels Like Jupiter, 2:00 Wednesday, Jeff Freeman, The Good Lieutenants and The Seth Freeman Band, with other acts added here and there throughout the evening.
Bus service to and from town will be provided again this year. Myers said the Alaska Cabaret, Hotel, Restaurant and Retailers Association will provide shuttles every 30 minutes or so from Fisherman’s Hall to the fairgrounds, and back.
“We always kind of have a hard time getting people on them. So we would like you to really, in your mind, help us this year. Because a lot of us were still turning off lights and picking up beer cans at two in the morning. We want to shut down, lights going off, power’s disconnected at 1 o’clock this year.”
This is the 18th year the Lions Club has hosted a music event in Kodiak, and the 8th Warm August Night. Prior to the one night event was the three-day Bear Country Music Festival.
No glass is allowed, but Myers said folks are welcome to bring their own beverages. Food will be for sale and a bonfire will be going to keep the evening truly warm.
