Spikers, Swimmers and Thomet Continue Winning Streaks

Another good weekend – mostly – for Kodiak High School athletes. Save for a drubbing on the gridiron, the Bears saw victories in cross country, volleyball and swimming.
Cross country
In cross country, Levi Thomet once again dominated the field while running away with the win in the Frank Dieckgraeff Invitational in Seward. He ran the five kilometer course in 15-minutes 57-seconds, almost a minute ahead of his nearest competitor. As a team, the boys were fourth, with 85 points. Kenai won with 63, followed by Colony and Grace. Wasilla rounded out the top five. Thirteen teams competed, including Barrow and Nome.
The top finisher among Kodiak girls was Zoe Bigley in 24th place with a time of 21-minutes 17-seconds. The Lady Bears were 8th in the team standings. Homer won, followed by Soldotna, Wasilla, Grace and Colony. Winner Allie Ostrander of Kenai was once again more than a minute ahead of second place, with a winning time of 17-minutes 44-seconds.
Volleyball
In volleyball, the Bears dropped their first game while playing in the Central Kenai Peninsula, but came back to win that match against Soldotna, and didn’t lose another game on the road trip, downing Kenai twice and So-Hi twice. The JV only dropped two games while winning all four of their matches, and the C-team was perfect, not losing a single game all weekend.
Swimming and Diving
The Bears boys and girls both saw success in their home pool, dominating Kenai. On Friday, the Kodiak girls won 72-to-39, while the Kodiak boys were split into two squads and came in 1-2 with the Blue team scoring 48 points and the Gold team 39. Kenai had 14. On Saturday, the Lady Bears won 78-23. The boys meet Saturday was scored as a “triple-dual-meet,” with Kodiak Gold downing Kodiak Blue and Kenai, and Kodiak Blue also beating the Kardinals.
Football
On the football field, the Kodiak Bears once again met its arch nemesis, the Soldotna Stars, and once again came away winless. The Stars rolled to a 63-to-nothing victory, scoring four touchdowns and a safety in the first period, three TDs in the second and two more in the third.
