Bering Sea Crab Season Opens Today – For Some

Lauren Rosenthal/KUCB
At noon today, the Bering Sea crab season officially opens. But the vast majority of fishing boats will be stuck in port, because the federal employees who issue their permits have been furloughed.
Vessels that are set up to harvest community development quota, or CDQ, will be able to start fishing on time, though. That’s because the State of Alaska hands out those permits — not the federal government. According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, five vessels were signed up to fish for CDQ as of late yesterday.
