Coast Guard Calls Off Search of Mystery Flare Source

The Coast Guard suspended the active search of the source of a mysterious flare sighting near the vicinity of Long Island. Coast Guard Spokeswoman Sara Mooers said the search was called off just before 1 p.m. Wednesday when no source or signs of distress were reported.
Tuesday night around 10:30 p.m. a Coast Guard air crew that was conducting routine training saw the descent of a red meteor flare near Long Island, but didn’t see where it was fired from. The crew searched the area but found no signs of distress.
Mooers said air crews returned to the area at first daylight Wednesday but were unable to find the source of the flare. Searches continued into the early afternoon. Mooers said the Coast Guard has not received any reports of missing or overdue persons.
While many flare sightings turn out to be non emergency situations, Mooers said they take them very seriously and launch immediately.
She said the search will resume if additional information comes to light indicating someone needs Coast Guard assistance.
