A woman with roots in Kodiak has been appointed to the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. Mary Hughes, a member of the University of Alaska Board of Regents, is the first Alaskan to serve on the national board, which provides guidance for regents around the country.
Kodiak’s Pat Jacobs, the chair of the U of A Board of Regents said Hughes’ appointment will strengthen the Alaska organization’s relationship with the national board.
Hughes was appointed to the U of A’s Board of Regents in 2002 by then-Governor Tony Knowles. She has also worked for U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski and was the City of Anchorage’s municipal attorney in the 1990s. She also hosted a weekly talk show on Anchorage radio for seven years.
She lived in Kodiak as a child while her father practiced law here.
