The Kodiak Crab Fest kicks off on Thursday and on this week’s Talk of the Rock we’re going to hear a little bit about the science behind the crustaceans that inspired the annual festival.
Brad Stevens was a long-time crab researcher here in Kodiak before he moved to the East Coast in 2006. Stevens returned to Kodiak a few weeks ago for work, and to share his recent project – a reference book devoted to the biology and fisheries of king crab.
“It’s the first textbook devoted entirely to the subject of king crabs.”
Stevens will discuss his motivation behind compiling and editing the dense volume, which is titled King Crabs of the World: Biology and Fisheries Management. He said he wanted to make sure important research done over the past three decades was available in one text.
“A lot of the people that studied king crabs have retired and or died and there’s a lot of knowledge there that was going to be lost. So I tried to get as many of those people involved in this project as I could. There are 23 co-authors in the book.”
