Council Will Talk Snack Shack, Safe Streets Tonight

The Kodiak City Council will meet for a work session tonight and discuss, among other things, the possibility of a permanent snack shack at Baranof Park. The council was approached by members of the Kodiak Football League to manage a snack shack that would sell concessions and merchandise during athletic events.
City code currently prohibits such permanent structures for the purpose of displaying, selling or soliciting the sale of goods or services, but it does allow permits to sell concessions using temporary structures. The football league uses one of these permits annually, but the hope was to build a permanent structure that could then be rented out during the off season or used for city purposes.
During a work session last month, the city decided the football league should work with the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board on the matter. The council will hear the board’s recommendation on the permanent snack shack during tonight’s work session.
Also on the agenda is a presentation of a proposed Kodiak Safe Streets Taskforce and a discussion of the Marine Highway Transportation Advisory Board’s visit to Kodiak and a possible reception. The council will also hear a presentation on building permit fees and review a draft letter to the Environmental Protection Agency regarding the Clean Water Act.
Tonight’s work session starts at 7:30 p.m. and will be held in the multipurpose room of the Kodiak Public Library. The council will hold a regular meeting this Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
