Fisherman Injured in Winch Incident

Kodiak Fire Department rescue personnel were called to Pier 2 Monday afternoon in response to an injury to a fisherman aboard the FV Provider. Fire Chief Rome Kamai said the man’s leg was caught in a winch and his foot was crushed.
He said an ambulance crew responded just before 4 p.m., but soon found they needed more equipment to retrieve the injured person.
“It was determined that the person with the injury was not able to walk or climb the ladder, and so we had to bring in some other equipment; our lader truck and our rescue truck that we use for these kinds of situations," Kamai said. "We have ropes and systems that we can use to put the patient, or person, into what we call a Stokes basket. And then we raised them up and off the vessel with our ladder truck and rope.”
Kamai said it took about 25 minutes to get the unidentified fisherman from the boat into the ambulance, which he described as a pretty quick recovery. The injured man was then transported to Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center for treatment. His current condition is unknown.
