Bears Second in Title Chase, but Hammer Record Book

Jay Barrett/KMXT

Though the Kodiak squads fell just short of state team titles, there were plenty individual records set by the Bears at the State Swimming and Diving Championship in Anchorage over the weekend.

Kodiak swimmers set six state records on their way to helping both the boys and girls to second place finishes.

Senior Ila Hughes finished the 50 yard freestyle in 23.2 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 50.51 seconds;

Fellow senior Tahna Lindquist twice broke the record in the 200 individual medley – a record she’s owned for two years – first in Friday’s preliminarys and then lowering her own time on Saturday to 2-minutes 3.61 seconds. She also set the state record in the 500 freestyle at 4-minutes 53-.5 seconds.

Freshman Talon Lindquist set new marks in two races; 1-minute 52-seconds in the 200 individual medley and 51.23 seconds in the 100 backstroke.

Tahna, who will be swimming for the University of Hawaii next year, was named the Outstanding Girls Swimmer.

Kodiak tied with Dimond with 87 points, good for second to the Juneau girls who scored an even 100.

The Kodiak boys, with 96 points, were second to Dimond’s 110. Service was a distant third.

We’ve got full results after the jump.
