One of Kodiak’s local quilters was notified last week that one of her pieces has been accepted into a prestigious competition back East. Jennifer Eubank’s work entitled “I Promise You the Moon, the Stars, the Sun” is a semifinalist in the American Quilter’s Society International Quilt Show in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Hers is just one of 200 quilts selected from 36 states and nine other countries to reach the semifinals.

Eubank’s quilt is not quite five-feet to a side, and is made by custom combining elements from three different designs by Judy Neimeyer. One of its unique design elements is a scalloped edge around the entire quilt.

“That was part of the challenge for me was to grow my skills. I had never done a scalloped edge before and so it was a little bit challenging, but it definitely made me better.”

The actual quilting of a quilt is the combining of the top with the design, the bottom and batting in between, and like many quilters, Eubank outsourced that to another skilled artist.

“Peggy Nekiferoff did the actual quilting of the three. You know I pieced the top and she put the three pieces together. And she did a masterful job. Peggy’s really got some really great, amazing skills as a quilter onboard as well.”

Eubank said the American Quilter’s Society hosts several shows annually, and she was encouraged to enter while attending one of them:

“It’s an organization that hosts different events around the country and international events. They just had their international market down in Houston and had hundreds beautiful quilts on display. And wghen I went down, my friend Jeanette, said, ‘Boy, you should enter in the next one.’ And so when the application came up in November, I entered and I just found out on the second.”

Eubank’s quilt will be on display in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, from March 11th through 14th, and is in the running for the $10,000 Best of Show prize, as well as 26 other awards.
