A married U.S. Coast Guard couple once stationed in Kodiak were attacked by another guardsman in Bourne, Massachusetts, late last week, leaving one dead, and the other hospitalized.

Petty Officers Anna and Lisa Trubnikova were attacked in their home an hour south of Boston by heavily-armed Coast Guardsman Adrian Loya.

Lisa Trubnikova was killed in Thursday’s shooting, her wife Anna was wounded. In the ensuing standoff with police, Bourne Police Officer Jared MacDonald was shot in the back but is expected to recover.

Authorities haven’t disclosed a motive for the shooting, but Lisa Trubnikova’s relatives told the Boston Globe that Loya had been pursuing Lisa for years, beginning when he was stationed at Coast Guard Base Kodiak at the same time as the two women. The same relative told the Globe that Loya was obsessed and continued to pursue Lisa Trubnikova romantically even after she married and moved to Cape Cod. Relatives said they did not believe Lisa Trubnikova had reported Loya’s behavior to the Coast Guard, believing she could handle the situation on her own.

Thirty-one-year-old Lisa Trubnikova was stationed at Coast Guard Joint Base Cape Cod, while 30-year-old Anna Trubnikova is based at Woods Hole.

Coast Guard First District Commander Rear Adm. Linda Fagan thanked the Bourne Police Department for its swift response, saying it saved the life of Anna Trubnikova. She also thanked Police Officer MacDonald, who himself was a Coast Guard veteran.
