Bears QB Tops in Northern Lights Conference

Jay Barrett/KMXT

The Northern Lights Conference All-Star Football Team was announced over the weekend, with a Kodiak player taking one of the top positions on the first team.

Andreas Carros, the Bears’ quarterback was named the top signal-caller in the conference. And every quarterback needs a good target, which Kodiak had in Tyler Wietfeld, who was named one of two first-team wide receivers. Meanwhile, Kordell Pillans was named one of two top offensive tackles on the first team.

And since schools at this level often need players to line up on both sides of the ball, Pillans was also named a first team defensive lineman. Shaun Walton, a defensive back, joined him on the defensive first team.

And for those times when an offensive drive stalled, a good punter is valuable, and Kodiak’s Giovani Martinez was named the conference’s best. He was also named to the second team as a wide receiver. He was joined there by Jay Miranda at running back.

On second team defense, Jake Yavorsky and Wes Walker were picked for their play at inside linebacker and defensive back, respectively. Yavorsky also got an honorable mention at offensive guard and Hunter Bigley got the same for his work both at center and on the defensive line.

Meanwhile, the Kodiak boys won the Palmer Swimming and Diving Invitational. The Kodiak girls were third.

The Bears dominated the event with 111 points to outpace Soldotna with 70, Colony with 64 and host Palmer with 27. Kenai rounded out the top five.

The Colony Knights had 91 points to win the girls team crown. Soldotna had 79 with Kodiak racking up 58. Palmer had 40 and Valdez 20.

We have full results posted after the jump.
