KIB Assembly Reefers Back to Marijuana on Thursday’s Meeting Agenda

Kayla Desroches/KMXT

The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly is still building the groundwork for making a decision on marijuana businesses within borough boundaries. At its last regular meeting, the assembly considered several difference ordinances which would postpone the decision on marijuana and decided its goal was to give Kodiak more time to consult with a committee of representatives on how to approach marijuana regulations in the community. The updated ordinance on Thursday’s agenda reflects the assembly’s intention to create a marijuana task force and includes an expiration date for the opt-out ordinance, which is set for February 2017.

In other ways, the regular meeting is business as usual. The assembly will review a contract for road maintenance and repairs, and Mayor Jerrol Friend will make a presentation to the outgoing Borough Manager Bud Cassidy. The assembly is currently reviewing possible applicants for the job following Cassidy’s 90-day notice in December.

You can attend the regular meeting at 6:30 pm in the assembly chambers or tune into KMXT.
Correction 3/2/16: A former version stated that Assemblyman Mel Stephens’ original opt-out ordinance is on the agenda for Thursday’s regular meeting, but since then, the borough has sent KMXT the assembly’s updated work on the proposed ordinance.
