Kids Create Documentaries about the Fishing Industry

Some local kids are completing documentaries about the fishing industry.

Educator Marie Acemah led the digital storytelling group last year as well, when they covered climate change. Other topics she and her students have explored in previous years include the Exxon Valdez oil spill and Filipino community stories.

For this assignment, the kids sat down with members of the fishing industry and captured their experiences through film.

8th grader Janny Eng spoke about one interviewee who stood out to her.

“I met a guy from – he worked at Trident and he was from Laos and so he shared his story with me of how he got here. He swam across the Mekong river to get to a refugee camp and from that refugee camp, he went onto the United States.”

You can hear that voice alongside many others at a documentary screening tonight in the library multi-purpose room at 7 p.m.
