The Alutiiq Museum and Archaeological Repository is now more than halfway to the funding goal for its Ancestors’ Memorial.
They’re developing a piece of city land just behind the museum into a public park that’ll honor Alutiiq ancestors, history, and culture.
Chief curator Amy Steffian says the museum began fundraising last fall and is aiming at a goal of $179,000.
She says they hit the $100,000 mark on Friday.
“We have a number of large, pending requests out there that we’re waiting to hear about. We have asked the Rasmuson Foundation for a grant. We have others that have been asked to support, so we believe that we have a good chance for receiving that support, and that will push us with the remaining brick sales – we have about 200 bricks left to sell – to our goal.”
The Alutiiq Museum is selling inscriptions on bricks that will placed in the park walkway. Steffian says they’re also raising funds with grants and donations from corporations.
She says they hope to break ground on Memorial Day.
