Someone allegedly tried to kidnap a young female student at Baranof Park yesterday. That’s according to an alert from the Kodiak Police Department seeking public assistance to find a person of interest.

According to the notice, KPD heard about the attempt at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Sgt. Francis De La Fuente says the student was making a phone call when somebody grabbed her from behind.

School Superintendent Larry LeDoux says, following the incident, Kodiak Middle School staff closed down its annual Field Day event and escorted the students back to the school.

LeDoux calls it a good wakeup call to remain vigilant and says he’s not aware of a similar abduction attempt ever having happened under his watch as an administrator. He declined to go into any more details about the situation.

De Le Fuente says the student didn’t see the suspect’s face and a witness gave a description. According to the alert from KPD, officers are looking for a male with dark hair and an average build who stands about 5’8 or 5’10.

The alert states he was reported to have been wearing a black “Thrasher” sweatshirt, black pants, and Xtratuf boots.
