Kodiak area sees job loss

The Kodiak Island Borough lost jobs over the last couple of years.

That’s according to this month’s issue of Economic Trends from the Alaska Department of Labor.

The area saw a roughly 5 percent job loss from 2015 to 2017. That’s not as big as the almost 22 percent loss in the North Slope Borough or the 14 percent loss in Yakutat, but certainly more than communities like Juneau at 1 percent.

On the other end of the spectrum, some areas gained jobs. The Bristol Bay Borough tops the list with a 15 and a half percent increase.

The publication notes that the change in Kodiak may be due to a shift in the fishing industry.
