Local man dies when boat capsizes in Chiniak Bay

A Kodiak man died on Thursday afternoon after his boat capsized in Chiniak Bay. His adult son was rescued by the Coast Guard after clinging to the overturned vessel for more than two hours.

Alaska State Troopers confirm that Welby Jensen, age 60, of Kodiak, died in the boating accident which occurred midday on Thursday.

According to the Trooper’s website, 32-year-old Brandon Jensen, of Kodiak was rescued after he flagged down a passing vessel for help.

A Coast Guard rescue swimmer found Jensen’s body inside the overturned 22-foot Hewescraft fishing boat.
