Subsistence Community Potluck Monday evening 6-9 p.m.

The Sun’aq Tribe of Kodiak will host a community potluck Monday evening which features subsistence foods from the Kodiak area. It’s being held in conjunction with the Monday and Tuesday meeting of the Kodiak/Aleutians Subsistence Regional Advisory Council.

The Kodiak community will have a rare chance to taste and learn more about locally caught subsistence foods such as seal, sea lion and bear during tonight’s Subsistence Community Potluck.

Now in its third year, the potluck is a popular event where Native and non-Native residents alike can come together and share traditional subsistence meals.

Subsistence Community Potluck Mon. April 22 from 6-9 p.m. at Koniag/KANA Building on Near Island.

The event is scheduled to coincide with the meeting of a federal advisory group that deals with subsistence issues.

The Kodiak/Aleutians Subsistence Regional Advisory Council begins its spring meetings in Kodiak today at the Kodiak Inn Harbor Room. K-RACK, also known as Kodiak RACK, meets all day today and tomorrow.

Kelly Krueger is the Tribal Biologist for Sun’aq  Tribe of Kodiak. She said Sun’aq was asked to host a subsistence potluck in 2017 and it has since become an annual event.

“And so this is our third year. We’ve had a lot of really great food. We get seal, sea lion, bear, elk, deer, some really great smoked duck.  We get all sorts of good food and it’s a good opportunity to just meet with your community members, your friends, people, your neighbors, and just share some great food together.”

Krueger said you can even get the recipe for your favorite dishes.

“Yeah, it’s really informal, but what we do, we have label cards just saying what the food is. And if you want to get a recipe, you can just ask the person who made it.”

Krueger suggests participants bring a dish to pass.

The potluck will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. this evening at the Koniag/KANA Building on Near Island. It is free and open to the public.
