Community Clean-Up is Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

It’s time to clean up all the crud and trash that has collected on Kodiak roadsides and beaches. Pick up your bags at Kodiak High School parking lot. Also at the school, there will be special containers for hazardous waste, old computers and cardboard boxes. Plus, hotdogs and snacks.

The grass is greening and birds are singing and that means it’s time for spring cleaning. In a big way.

Kodiak’s annual Community Clean-Up takes place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It’s a day when the town turns out to pick up winter’s accumulation of trash on the side of roads, on beaches, and around neighborhoods.

The event is sponsored by the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce. Sarah Phillips is the Chamber’s Community Relations Direction. She says businesses and people of all ages and sizes rally to put a shine on Kodiak.

“It’s just a really nice event for the entire community to participate. We take so much pride in the beauty of our island so it’s really amazing to see our residents put their words into action on Community Clean-Up Day.”

Here is how it works. Starting at 9 a.m. people can go to the high school parking lot, near the auditorium entrance, and get those bright yellow bags we often see on the side of the road.

Let them know what areas you’ll be cleaning so they can arrange to have the bags picked up.

Head on out to clean up. And when you are done, enjoy hot dogs and snacks back at the high school.

Clean-up day is also a time to get rid of bulky items, hazardous materials, and electronics that cannot be recycled.

  • The bulky stuff can go to the solid waste facility. Up to 250 lbs. of residential waste is free of charge on Saturday.
  • Metals without any oil on them can go to Nick’s Scrap Metal in Bells Flats.
  • Hazardous materials such as paint and antifreeze, and old computers and batteries can go to the high school parking lot where there will be special disposal units for them.

And between now and May 17, people with junk vehicles can apply with the borough for a chance to win the junk vehicle lottery. Up to 16 people will be able to get their junk vehicles removed for free. Contact the borough at 486-9363 for information.

“The entire community really comes together on this one specific day,” said Phillips.

Again, Saturday’s clean-up runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
