Power outages for Bells Flats, Chiniak, and Pasagshak today, for Coast Guard soon

KEA crews have been working for years to transition system from old navy days. This week’s work is final part of that project.

Bells Flats, Chiniak, and Pasagshak outage Monday, and outages for base are being coordinated with command.

Power was expected to be back on by 2:00 p.m., if not sooner.

Kodiak Electric Association is  working on the power system out the road and has  shut off electricity from past the Coast Guard base to the end of road in both Chiniak and Pasagshak.

The planned outage is expected to last until about 2 :00 p.m.

Darron Scott is Kodiak Electric Association’s President and CEO. He says the outage is necessary to upgrade the system which is a remnant from the old navy days.

“And we’ve been working for several years to bring that into the rest of the system, and this is now that final transition to do that.”

Scott added that today’s outage does not affect the base, but that KEA will be working with base command over the next several days to perform similar work on that system.

“There’s different parts of the base and they’ll be done at different times. We’ve worked with base command there to work on all their different assets they have there to make sure that they’ve got all the information they need for the different power outages that we’ll have at their site.”

Base command will keep Coast Guard personnel updated on when to expect those outages.
