25-year-old Coast Guard man killed in fall near Buskin Beach

A 25-year-old Coast Guard member was killed on Wednesday when he fell from a cliff overlooking the ocean near Buskin Beach, a popular hiking and fishing area near the Kodiak Airport.

Ricky Reese Jr. of Georgia was hiking at the top of a cliff near the beach with a friend when he fell 60 feet, according to an Alaska State Trooper Dispatch posted online

Emergency Medical Services and the Coast Guard Fire Department were notified and arrived on scene. They attempted lifesaving efforts on Reese who was eventually transported to the Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.

The Troopers report that Reese’s next of kin was notified by the Coast Guard.

Public Affairs Specialist Lauren Dean, in Kodiak, said the Coast Guard was unable to provide any specifics at this time  out of respect for Reese’s immediate family, as well as the entire Kodiak Coast Guard community.

Dean did say the accident was ‘deeply tragic,’ and that it will take some time for fellow service members to “fully grasp what has happened.”
