Kodiak’s new bookstore open for business on Mill Bay Road.

After several years without one, Kodiak once again has a locally owned independent bookstore. The Islander Bookshop held its grand opening on Saturday.

The store has more than 3,000 hand-selected books recommended by Kodiak community members. Store owner Melissa Haffeman was busy on Friday putting finishing touches and unpacking boxes, but found time last week to take this photo of the main sitting area with a bar-height table tucked up in front of the window.

The bookshop is located at 1315 Mill Bay Road in the KVOK building, across from Wild Trader’s.
