UPDATE: NCIS releases more details on shooting at Spruce Cape SEAL base

The following was released by a spokesman for the NCIS [Naval Criminal Investigative Service].

KMXT posts it here as received, with minor formatting changes so it is easier to read.

Thanks to Jacob Resneck at CoastAlaska in Juneau for the assistance.

“On Saturday, June 13, at around 10:30 p.m., Alaska Daylight Time, an unauthorized civilian, 30-year-old Jayson Vinberg of Kodiak, Alaska, entered the Naval Special Warfare Detachment Kodiak compound and attempted to enter one of its buildings.

A Naval Special Warfare service member confronted the intruder, and events led to the service member using deadly force.

The NSW service member is in good condition and receiving all needed support from NSW leadership.

There is no known threat to the community at this time.

Because this incident occurred on a Navy base, NCIS is leading the investigation with support from the Alaska State Troopers and Coast Guard Investigative Service.

Out of respect for the investigative process, NCIS will not release any additional information at this time. Any questions regarding NSW security or personnel should be directed to NSW.”

This is a breaking story and KMXT will have more information as it becomes available.
