Steve Wielebski, president of Kodiak Island Search and Rescue, said a man and a 13-year-old girl set out from Mission Beach on the outskirts of Kodiak on Wednesday for an afternoon of kayaking.

Wielebski says they were headed for Crooked Island, not far from Near Island, but the wind blew them off course.

“They ended up on Woody Island. They spent the night. The troopers, the Coast Guard  and everybody was involved,” Wielebski said.

Searchers arrived to find them walking out of the woods in good condition at about 10:30 a.m.
