The search for the head of the Kodiak Area Native Association has been suspended.
The Coast Guard says KANA’s CEO, Andy Teuber, was piloting a helicopter that disappeared Tuesday afternoon. The Coast Guard says it launched a search for Teuber 66 nautical miles northeast of Kodiak. Searchers are looking for a black and white Robinson 66 helicopter with the tail number N1767.
Debris found earlier has been determined to be consistent with that from a helicopter. The Coast Guard searched for 13 hours and covered 888 square nautical miles in their search area.
A family member called the Coast Guard District 17 Watchstanders around 5:00 p.m. Tuesday evening. They were told Teuber had taken off from Merrill Field Airport in Anchorage about three hours earlier and was headed to Kodiak. He is believed to be the only person on board the helicopter.
A MH-60 helicopter crew and an HC-130 Hercules were dispatched to search for him. A Coast Guard spokesperson said the search crew spotted debris in the search area around 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening.
Teuber resigned last week as chairman and president of the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, and from the University of Alaska Board of Regents the same day.
