Kodiak EOC raises community risk level to yellow(ish)

The Kodiak Emergency Operations Center announced this (THURSDAY) afternoon that they have raised the community risk level from green to yellow.

According to the EOC’s Community Mitigation Plan, the yellow risk level indicates a “Pandemic Alert Period”, prompting mask recommendations and limiting gatherings of people to fewer than 20 people. However, the EOC said that they are not restricting indoor capacity for local businesses at this time.

Instead, they are recommending that businesses encourage employees and customers wear masks, acknowledging that some businesses, the Coast Guard base and Kodiak schools are already requiring masks.

Today’s (THURSDAY’s) announcement comes after days of mounting pressure from Kodiak residents and the Kodiak medical community to raise the risk level.

With active cases nearing 100 on the island, the most Kodiak has seen since last winter’s surge that prompted shutdowns, the EOC decided to raise the risk level at their regularly scheduled Thursday meeting.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned to KMXT for continuing coverage.
