Kodiak Island experiences major power outage Monday night

Kodiak residents experienced a power outage Monday night that left thousands in the dark for about two hours. According to a press release from the Kodiak Electric Association, a critical piece of substation equipment called a circuit switcher failed, shutting down the whole system.

The power went out at Safeway and left customers to either purchase their groceries with cash or wait until their systems rebooted. March 27, 2023. (Brian Venua/KMXT)

The outage started near the substation and slowly spread across their entire service area. KEA President Darron Scott said in an email that this is only the second time Kodiak has experienced an outage this large since 2015.

The cooperative performed maintenance on the substation Monday and Tuesday

and plans to take additional steps to prevent future shutdowns.
